There is a large number of higher educational institutions in France. They are either public (subsidised by the French State) or private. Enrolment fees in a public institution (university, highschool and schools that have signed a contrat with the State) are less expensive than in private schools.
p>Many of these institutions are specialized schools. Certain vocational trainings are exclusively available in one of them (for instance architect, nurse…), for some others there is also a training at the university or in a higher educational institution (journalist, art restoration).

All the institutions mentioned above are public. Admission is made after an entrance exam. The number of candidates to the entrance exam is much higher than the number of students admitted.
Please note : there are many specialized private institutions. It is sometimes easier to be admitted to them than to reknowned public institutions (because there are fewer candidates) but they are also more expensive. Before enroling in a private institution, check carefully that they offer a high quality training.
